It features bright colors and geometric shapes. The whole ad is the same image repeated four times with just a variation in the design of the can. The large square created by the four smaller squares creates a grid pattern along with strong vertical and horizontal lines. The font is kept very simple in both shape and color. The colorful ad keeps the font black as to not compete with the design of the cans of soda. Much of the space is filled with color except for the top and bottom, which is white. The white seems to frame the color squares and draws your eye in.

This is an example of a Bauhaus ad. The colors are very muted except for the bold black. The shapes are more organic and intersect each other rather than lined up on an axis. The entire main image and text is on a diagonal or along a curve. The attention of the ad is more on the graphic then the text along the bottom that includes the important information. The text is all in caps and sanserif font. There is not too much negative space and it is distributed around the image evenly. There also seems to be texture found on the background. It is easier to see in the lighter colors. The font featured in the center is very boxy, including very few curves. Instead of curves in letters there are right angles.

This coke ad is an example of Retro Modern. It looks to be painted or done through the use of pastels. The image is very realistic and the women’s face looks to be portrait of a specific person. The colors are also realistic. The font is simple but not too modern. Colors found in the image are repeated in the text and in the logo for Coke. The ad seems to embrace the text and allows it to be part of the ad instead of just sitting on top of it. Everything in the ad follows a center vertical axis except for the coke bottle. The bottle follows a diagonal that reaches the center of the ad. This brings attention to the lady’s mouth, which is found near the text, which captures the purpose of the ad.

This ad is an example of Nostalgic Remix. The flower design around the edge of the ad mimics some Victorian designs. The flowers seem to blend into the background and allow the boots to power the ad. The bright colors grab the attention of the audience and force them to look at them. The font chosen matches the flowers. It is also the same color to blend into the background. It is interesting how the ad does not go to edge. The white space frames the boots and grayish background. The boots are also outlined in white which draws even more attention to them.

Subway

This was my first experience every using Illustrator.

Peculiar Parallelism

For my ad, I played with the idea of a collection of objects. My country was Greece and I focused on how much their culture was centered around family. The government of Greece considers anyone who lives under the same roof to be members of the same family. I played with the idea of connection and grouping of individual pieces creating a whole. For my final product, I used rope to create individual spirals that were connected by a blue ribbon. The mat reflects the idea of the journey a visitor to a house would encounter. My parents arrived in February of 1999 and my brother and I came later. We chose Chapel Hill, North Carolina because of my dad’s job. We also had family here. My mom’s brother is a doctor at UNC. We still had our house in Guatemala so for the first three years my dad would spend three weeks in Guatemala and then one week in the US.

Where do your parents live now?
-They moved back to Guatemala in the summer of 2007. Since I have graduated high school I have spent my summers back home. My family comes to visit once a semester. It is were not having a house in the United States but I have gotten use to not having them around.

How did you learn English?
-I went to a private school in Guatemala. In preschool and during elementary school everything was taught in both English and Spanish, so I learned both. Guatemala is a 3rd world county so the public schools are very poor, over 70% of the population is poor. Some public schools don’t even have desks. The private schools have waiting lists and my parents put me on a waiting list since I was born because there is not a lot of space in the schools. My mom had gone to school there so that is why we chose that one.

Do you speak English or Spanish with your family?
-We speak Spanish. I only use my Spanish when I talk with them on the phone so I am not practicing it very much. It is hard if I spend time at home and then return here and the same goes when I return home. After a short time though I catch back up and it is not so rough.

So did your parents grow up in Guatemala?
-My dad is from Spain and my mom’s family is from Spain but she grew up in Guatemala.

How did schooling work?
-We went to school from January to October. In Guatemala there is a rainy season. From October to December there is not a lot of rain so that is when our break is. In the mountains of Guatemala City it is usually 70-80 degrees and the beach is warm year round, usually in the 90s. It is weird for me to think that it snows at the beach here in the winter because we are use to spending New Years at the beach.

Describe the differences of culture between Guatemala and the US.
-The main difference is in the way people interact. Instead of just saying “hi” we would greet each other with a kiss. Family is also very important and we take family very seriously. Most people stay in Guatemala all their life. Everyone knows everyone and stay close throughout their lives. It is not uncommon to live with your parents until marriage. I know all of my friends’ family including their grandparents, parents and siblings. I still keep in touch with my group of friends. There are 31 of us and out of that only 8 live in Guatemala now. Many students go out of the country for college. It’s common for people to go outside of the country to get experience for 4-5 years and then return. Since so many students are going to college outside of the country, they have slowly started to change the school year to be same as it is in the US. My friends who graduated back home were in the first graduating class to graduate in June. They did that so students would not miss a year of school since they would graduate in October and start back till August.

What did you and your friends do for fun?
-A lot of my friends had beach houses or houses on the river. We would go to relax sometimes just with friends and sometimes with their families. The city is not safe. We would go out because there is a zone where the clubs and bars are. Here everything shuts down at 2:30am where there it was 1 am. Drinking is much more of a social thing. The age is 18 and many of my friends do it with their family, it’s not wired like it is here.

What was your idea of the US before you arrived?
-I had been here before. We use to come two times a year. There are not many stores in Guatemala so we would come to Miami where we had family usually between October and December when there was no school. We came sometimes in June or July for 2-3 weeks and we would go to Disney World or California.

What are some of your goals for your future?
-I pan to return to Guatemala. Right now I am an ESS major and there is a great need for physical therapists back home. I would be a nurse but they are not considered a great job. You can’t make a living wage being one. I plan to go to grad school after UNCG for physical therapy for 3 years and work for another year in the US. My mom always taught me to pick something that would give back to the community to help the poor and be some kind of social work.

IAR 212 Pattern Perception

I started with a picture of the Eiffel Tower. After sitting down and reading this article, I found that computers are more than just a way to get work done faster. The software developed for use in today’s design world, works side by side with the actual designer or architect to create a better product that individuals might not be able to develop just on their own.

There has always been a desire for perfection. Since the Vitruvian man by da Vinci, the quest for creating a perfect product has been present. The software used today, is able to assist designers to create their perfect buildings. Software has means to tools that can be used when designing that humans do not have access to. It can see what is not already there. For example, the article discusses how details of buildings can be shown by the computer almost instantly, but would take an extremely talented artists countless hours to complete. The computer also has the ability to show buildings that have not been built yet merely designed. It can take that design and place it where the building will one day stand. This ability of the computer greatly impacts the design process.

Computers have impacted what designers can do. Before these programs, everything in the design process was done by hand. The computer is able to take what would take hours upon hours to do and condense it into only a few minutes. The time saved by the computer can be predisposed into other parts of the design process. This becomes especially important if further down the project the designer realizes that a mistake has been made. Many times one small change will affect the whole project. By hand this could take long hours of finding the mistake and then fixing it and everything there after it. The computer could fix the mistake in minutes and without much headache.

I believe that the future can only be positively impacted by technology. I believe that these programs will only help designers to create better products with faster results. It is hard to even imagine what will be developed next. It seems that every time a new program or technology is developed the next version is only a year away. Even with all the technology there are still problems that the will need to be addressed in the future. A computer that freezes and documents that continue to get lost are only a few of them. If designers sill plan on using computer-aided programs to design their projects, there needs to be a way to save their work that is more reliable.

Close To Home

Levels of Connection

The idea of modernism stretched across the architecture, art, music and literature worlds shortly after World War II. The connection between the different genres of modernism and the new ideas developed is the building block of the ‘Close To Home’ exhibit. All throughout the exhibit are different levels of connection ranging from the obvious, the wood panels, to the not so obvious, the intellectual experience.
The use of materials throughout the space connects the information displayed to one another and to the visitor. The entire exhibit consists of one large gestural moment that extends both inside of the gallery and out into the lobby. The wooden panels along with the metal accents create a continuous path that extends throughout the space to allow movement through the exhibit. Walking through the space and weaving through the panels allows the visitor to fully engage the exhibit.

The wooden panel in the lobby follows the same diagonal as the panel inside the gallery. This diagonal continues throughout the space and connects all the panels to the central moment.

The layout of the panels throughout the room allows space for computers and areas where videos can be shown. The connection of technology to the space allows the visitor to experience the exhibit on another level. This level allows the visitor to experience more then what can just be read. The movie travels through a modern house showing its modern elements. The video is successful in demonstrating and showing what much of the text is explaining. The text includes information about modern designers, examples of modern work through Greensboro, and the development of the interior architecture program at UNC-Greensboro. The text connects the visitor to Greensboro and to the idea of modernism.

The panels are arranged in an exact manner that creates areas for the computers and video screens to be displayed. The videos and computer reveal information that is hard to understand through just text alone.

As I traveled through the exhibit I experienced these connections first hand. The lighting in the gallery is more subdued then the natural light in the lobby. Shadows are cast throughout the space playing off the wood panels and metal accidents. I found myself following the path scanning all the work and then reentering the space to study it more. The contrast of metal and wood along with the text and graphics really grabbed my attention and made me want to continue through the space. The layout of the panels is what really makes this exhibit a success. The connections found throughout, help the visitor to experience the exhibit and come away from it with an understanding of what modernism is.

The interaction of the panels creates the pathway through the exhibit. Information found on either side of the panel explains the different aspects of modernism.

My Sister's House: Phase III: Narrative and Program Analysis

The suites found in ‘My Sister’s House’ are designed to allow the teenage mothers to feel as if they are home. It honestly never occurred to me that every element of every object has to be thought out and planned. The buildings we have learned about in this class are some of the most popular and most discussed in the 20th century. The designers of these buildings knew that they had the potential to be groundbreaking and start a revolution in the design world. Before this class, I never considered how design builds upon its self. The styles from long ago seem to reappear in the buildings of today.

The Robie House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1909, was one of my favorites we disused in class this semester. This building had strong horizontal lines instead of the common verticals. Buildings after this time started to stress the horizon instead of the vertical. Before this time, many buildings showed power and importance by going upward. The Robie house did the opposite. It blended into its surrounding by have horizontal planes that extend and overpower the smaller verticals. This was also a new idea that is still used today. Before buildings had to stand out and had ornamentation along the outside. Wright removed those elements and kept his buildings very simple and plain. This idea was copied many times afterward.

Preserving the past is a big concept in architecture created today. It is quite common to find structures that have some connection to the past. This usually occurs through the use of columns, form, and line. I believe that the idea of creating an innovative building that reflects present circumstances is through the use of materials. With the buildings we have learned about in the past, they are usually constructed with concrete, brick, marble, etc. Now buildings are commonly found made of metal, wood, glass, and countless other materials. It is not uncommon to find structures that include several different materials on their outside. This is a relative new idea that goes to show how technology is represented in the buildings of today.

For the icons of modernism project, our group had air travel of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Through our research I found that air travel at that time was all about freedom. This was really the first time that traveling across the country and across the world was available to the average person. It was all about convenience, saving time, and comfort. Planes back then were just starting to divide into coach and business classes. They also started serving food and were designed to hold more people. Today the idea of travel is still very much about convenience and freedom. It is now easier then ever to order your ticket for a flight online. Planes are still designed with comfort in mind. Flights are now available nonstop for hours upon hours and the goal of the airline is to insure that their passengers are comfortable during these long trips through the extra large leg room and padded seats.

My Sister's House: Group Statement

"My Sisters' House" is a modern collaboration of open spaces and gestural moments to create for a more sculptural living environment for teenage mothers and their children.

My Sister's House: Individual Narrative

My Sister’s House started off as a basic design with enough square footage to allow room for mothers and their children to live. The sculptural floor plan allowed for our design to express a modern feel. It created spaces to allow extra rooms for the occupants the live. The feeling of the space now allows the mothers to feel comfortable in such a large building. The charretts helped us to understand how to develop our idea of modernism and how to incorporate it into the design of the building. The 1990s had a significant impact in our design. It forced us to reevaluate the space and allow for more gestural designs that reflect the ideals of that time period.
<img width='1' height='1'
